Give a "Gift of the Galaxy"!

Join OSC with local professional artist, Destanne Norris on Thursday, December 14th for a fun and casual painting evening. We will be creating an acrylic painting of the Spiral Galaxy!

Destanne will guide you in creating a galaxy painting that was inspired by her research of images from the Hubble Telescope.

No paint experience is necessary! All painting materials, instructions, and wine are provided, and you will be taking your masterpiece home. We will be working in acrylic paint on a 10' x 10' canvas. Besides your enthusiasm, please bring a paint shirt or apron.

Please note:

  • Doors open at 6:00pm! Participants will have full access of the OSC science galleries and are encouraged to visit our Space Room where we currently hold Destanne Norris' exhibition - Stellar!

  • Painting instruction will begin at 6:30pm sharp.

  • This is a 19+ event.

Destanne Norris Bio:

Destanne Norris was awarded a BFA (Honours) Degree in Painting and Drawing from the University of Victoria in British Columbia, Canada in 1987 and a Master of Fine Art Degree by Research at the University of Tasmania in Hobart, Tasmania, Australia in 2009. She has also participated in several art-in-residence programs.

Following Norris’ 1995 exhibition, “Leah’s Gift”, which was held to commemorate and celebrate the short life of her young daughter and that included interrelated artworks which were made years before her daughter was born, Norris retreated into nature. Over time, Norris’ artwork organically transitioned from the land and mountains, through the water and some fire, then into the sky before venturing into the vastness of space and the mysterious cosmos landscape.

Norris' paintings have been exhibited in Canada, Australia and Germany in Public, University, Artist-Run and Commercial Galleries. Her paintings have been purchased by hundreds of national and international private collectors and found in corporate and public collections:  the Alberta Foundation for the Arts, the Penticton Art Gallery, Jasper National Park, the Consulate General Japan, Finning Canada to name a few. Norris is represented by Gallery Odin on Silver Star Mountain.

In 2020, Norris published her first award winning book, "Leah's Gift: A Story about Reframing Loss", which includes her art. In addition, a documentary film, "Beneath the Painted Surface", about her art-life was produced and released in 2020 by independent filmmaker Brian Taylor of En Queue Film. The film is available to be watched on You Tube.
