Read on to learn our local team’s perspective on special places and experiences that we consider must-see gems.
Ellison Provincial Park
Ellison Park, on the Northeastern shore of Okanagan Lake, is known for its beautiful lake views and scenic rocky shoreline. A short 20-minute drive from downtown Vernon, it offers a wide selection of outdoor activities including hiking, swimming, fishing, canoeing, interpretative programs and more. It’s known to be a favourite with locals because of the sense of serenity that envelops the park. If you want to extend your stay, you can consider pitching a tent or parking your R.V. in one of the frontcountry campsites. (The campground operates from April to October.) Ellison is widely considered one of the most beautiful parks in the Okanagan and is well worth a visit!
Polson Artisan Night Market
There are so many reasons to visit Polson Park (check out or Ultimate Guide to Family Fun here), but the Polson Artisan Night Market is certainly near the top of the list! Focusing on independent local vendors (those who make, bake, grow or upcycle), the night market has been operating since 2021 and continues to expand and evolve every year. Visitors can expect a carefully curated selection of food trucks to accompany the market, making it an even more enjoyable experience. The Polson Artisan Night Market operates on Saturdays from May to September, typically from 4:00 - 8:00. Learn more about the vendors and special market events here.
Eating and Drinking in Downtown Vernon
Downtown Vernon offers a charming selection of eating and drinking establishments that are bound to please even the most discerning visitors. Whether you’re looking for a winery experience, inspired and innovative cuisine, or food of the world, you will probably find what you’re looking for in Vernon’s downtown area. One favourite with locals is Triumph Coffee, where every Tuesday they donate proceeds to a local charity. A number of Vernon’s most popular spots take advantage of the sunny summer weather and offer patios that allow you to enjoy your food and drink al fresco. Search by time of day, cuisine or dining experience on Tourism Vernon’s website here.
Okanagan Rail Trail
The Okanagan Rail Trail is the result of local and municipal governments stepping forward to purchase the discontinued CN rail corridor from Lumby Junction in Coldstream to Kelowna. Visitors and locals can now enjoy 50 km of maintained and primarily flat trails that offer beautiful lakeshore views, the opportunity to interact with wildlife, and–bonus–get exercise outdoors! Grab your bike and start off from Kal Beach, following the shore and offering stunning views of Kalamalka Lake. Even in the winter snow, the Okanagan Rail Trail can be used with snowshoes, fat bikes or cross country skis. Plan your trip here.
Outdoor Yoga Platforms at Predator Ridge
If you’re a yoga enthusiast or simply enjoy restorative and peaceful time outdoors, the three yoga platforms at Predator Ridge resort are the perfect place for you! Charmingly named Namaste, Chakra and Lavender, these outdoor platforms were created to help extend the appeal of Predator Ridge beyond simply golf amenities and offer spectacular views of Kalamalka Lake. Learn more about the outdoor classes and special multi-day retreats that are offered on the outdoor yoga platforms through Grace and Flow during the summer months.
Bruce Aikenhead Planetarium at Okanagan Science Centre
Last but certainly not least, did you know that our facility, the Okanagan Science Centre, is home to the Okanagan’s only fixed-roof planetarium? Visitors of all ages can attend the awe-inspiring shows that we offer on Saturdays and Sundays under the dome of the Bruce Aikenhead Planetarium. Join us as we gaze into the night sky while learning interesting and sometimes unexpected facts about the planets and galaxies from our passionate OSC Scientists.
