6-Week Project-Based Science Program | Grades 7–8
Can you build a community that can survive the future?
In Mission: Future Earth, students become scientists, engineers, and problem-solvers tasked with designing a sustainable community for 500 people. Over six weeks, students work on one evolving project, with each challenge building on the last.
Students will investigate ecosystems, cells, matter, electricity, energy, plate tectonics, earthquakes, and environmental sustainability while developing real-world skills in scientific inquiry, experimentation, engineering, and problem-solving.
Each week, students will:
Understand the Land — Choose the best location for their community.
Feed the Community — Design a sustainable food-production system.
Secure the Water — Build and test a water-treatment system.
Power the Future — Explore electricity and create an energy system.
Survive the Earthquake — Design and test earthquake-resistant structures.
Defend the Future — Bring everything together and present their completed community.
Mission: Future Earth incorporates learning from the BC Grade 7 and Grade 8 Science curriculum, including:
- Ecosystems, adaptation, and natural selection
- Cells and photosynthesis
- Matter, mixtures, elements, and compounds
- Electricity and magnetism
- Energy transfer and transformation
- Plate tectonics and geological processes
- Earthquakes and natural hazards
- Scientific inquiry and engineering
Final Showcase
The program culminates in a Mission: Future Earth Showcase, where students have the opportunity to present their completed communities and explain their scientific decisions to family and friends.
